How are they made?
Our Bamboo Straws are 100% handmade in Bali by Wayan and Gitok, as well as by Srii and Budi. The bamboo we use has been sustainably harvested without any type of chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers. Bamboo doesn’t need any type of irrigation and it’s considered the most sustainable plant on Earth. It can grow up to 1m per day depending on the species.
When we turn the bamboo into straws we only cut the top of the stems we want to use, this leaves the plant to grow healthy and strong without affecting the ecosystem at all. We first dry the stems under the hot Balinese sun for around 20 days, and once they’re dry we turn them into bamboo straws. We first cut them by hand to a size of 20cm (8 inches). We then boil them for 30 minutes, polish them (naturally, without any chemicals) and then we boil them for 30 minutes again. We then let them sit under the sun until they’re completely dry before we pack them in our recycled carton packs.
Each straw goes through a 4-stage quality control process, this process allows us to guarantee that no straw will be broken, or dirty, but also that they won’t have multiple black spots caused by mold or humidity, and most importantly, that they don’t have any bugs. That is why at Bali Boo we guarantee our straws are the best quality bamboo straws you will find.

We explain every single part of the process in our How to make Bamboo Straws- The Bali Boo Style! page.
Using your Bamboo Straws
Use your bamboo straws with every type of drink – from smoothies and cocktails to coconuts, sodas, and ice-teas. All you have to do is put it in your drink, and sip away. They are reusable; so don’t forget to take them with you wherever you go in the pouch provided and save the planet one drink at a time by refusing any type of single-use straws.
Cleaning your Bamboo Straws
After each use, rinse the straws with water and clean them on the inside with the brushes provided. They are also dishwasher safe ( remember to switch off the hot & dry function). Every few uses, we recommend you boil them in water with a bit of vinegar to completely disinfect them. But don’t forget to dry them immediately after, to keep them in tip-top condition.

• Can I use Bamboo straws with hot drinks?
Yes! you can use bamboo straws with hot drinks, without any problem. To make sure the heat exchange is not too drastic, we always recommend heating up a bit the bamboo straw under lukewarm water, that will heat it up a bit and reduce the heat exchange difference.
•What is the size of bamboo straws?
Being a natural product, diameters vary, our bamboo straws are around 5mm-11mm in diameter. The hole is approximately 1-2mm smaller than the full diameter. Our packs normally include a little bit of everything, narrow straws for cocktails and liquid drinks, and wider ones for milkshakes, smoothies, etc. The length of our standard straws are 20cm (8 inches), if you’d like to inquire about specific sizes, please contact us through our Wholesale page.
• How long do bamboo straws last?
With the correct care, bamboo straws can last a very long time! As with any natural product, the wear and tear will be a bit more noticeable than with other synthetic products, bamboo straws tend to darken a bit as the bamboo grows older, but they are still 100% usable, and safe. Learn how to take care of them by checking out the “Care Instructions” tab.
• How do you clean a bamboo straw?
Cleaning is super easy, you can either throw them in the dishwasher or clean them in hot water with the brushes provided. To disinfect them completely, we recommend putting them in boiling water for 10 minutes, and they’ll be good as new! Remember, the most important part is to always dry them properly. If you’d like to know more, please check our “Care Instructions” tab.
• Are bamboo straws dishwasher safe?
Yes! but we always recommend turning off the hot & dry function. Keep in mind it is a natural product, and that means that if the temperature exchange is very high, some might crack.
• Are bamboo straws child-safe?
Yes, our bamboo straws are child-safe. If your child is under 6 years old we always recommend keeping an eye out when they’re drinking from them. They are strong enough not to break when they bite, and they won’t be able to swallow them.
• What are bamboo straws made of?
The hint is in the name, our bamboo straws are made of 100% natural bamboo. Each straw is made from a stalk of bamboo, and 1 bamboo stalk can make up to 10 straws. If you’d like to learn more about how our bamboo straws are made, we recommend visiting our How to make bamboo straws page.
• Are bamboo straws eco-friendly / are bamboo straws good for the environment?
Bamboo straws are probably the most eco-friendly reusable straw there is. Bamboo is the most sustainable plant on Earth, it grows incredibly fast, and has a very high regenerative process, without the use of fertilizers or chemicals. Plus, the process of creating a bamboo straw is probably the least energy-consuming when compared to other reusable drinking straws, we basically only use a bit of energy to boil them to disinfect them clean, and a lot of solar light to dry them!
